Africa Oil & Gas Industry:
Crude oil exploration has been a significant source of revenue in Africa since its discovery in the mid-19th century. It has bolstered the continent's economy and improved the well-being of its citizens. However, historical challenges include conflicts arising from uneven redistribution of crude oil revenue and severe environmental pollution. Advances in geophysical survey techniques have expanded the possibility of commercial exploration beyond countries like Nigeria, Angola, Algeria, Libya, and Egypt.
Africa's large deposits of hydrocarbons are attributed to the occurrence of organic-rich, oil-prone Type I, II, and mixed II/III kerogens in sedimentary basins, trapped within reservoir rocks. Unethical practices by some multinational oil corporations have led to social movements and human rights concerns. The over-dependence on crude oil revenues has caused economic recessions in oil-producing countries. Host communities often suffer from a lack of infrastructure, clean water, and environmental violations.
This review examines crude oil exploration in Africa, highlighting its environmental and socio-economic implications. Recommendations are provided to encourage ethical and sustainable practices, minimizing negative impacts and improving the quality of life in affected communities.

Oil demand in Africa averaged 4.36 million barrels per day in 2022, a slight increase from the previous year and the second-highest volume for the year. The peak demand was recorded in 2019 at 4.43 million barrels per day. The continent's oil demand dynamics continue to shape and respond to global economic and geopolitical factors.
